He wants Rachel to know that there are other sides to this trial, besides the fact that thinking that you should only believe in the bible and what it says. It makes Rachel feel a little better because it makes Cates sound like a hero, and what he saying is true. Eventhough, that Rachel thinks that Cates should apoligize and say he didn't mean it, Rachel is happy to know that Cates is not always being cut down.
